About Peru

Founded in 1870 by E. R. Cutler; who was originally from LaSalle, IL and Peru, IL area.  Both names were proposed and voted on with Peru winning the majority of votes.  1902-1905 Oil Boom in Peru; population grew to 1500. First trains thru Peru were in the winter of 1886; Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific.  In 1872 the first school building built.  Present population 133.  Elevation 784.

 

People & Places of Interest

Notable Resident:  "Toot" Madelyn Lee Payne was born in Peru, October 26 1922. She was the Maternal Grandmother of Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States.

Local Landmark:  Mid Continent Brick Company on east edge of town. When owner passed away the company sold and was then Ludiwice Caladron Company, a textile company.
